Founder Jerry Lohr is considered to be one of California’s Central Coast winemaking pioneers; in the early ’70s, he chose Monterey County’s Arroyo Seco district for its cool, windy climate and rocky soils- ideal for Chardonnay. In the ’80s, he realized the potential for growing Bordeaux varietals in Paso Robles, given the area’s rich spoil and diurnal temperature swings. With 1,400 acres in Arroyo Seco and Santa Lucia Highlands, 2,700 acres in Paso Robles, and 30 acres in Napa Valley (Carol’s Vineyard, specifically), J. Lohr was established some five decades ago and still remains family owned today. Producing a diverse palette of sustainably-farmed fruit, the winery intends to craft wines showcasing bold, concentrated flavours with a vibrant sense of place.
Tasting Notes
On the nose, aromas are reminiscent of white peach, apricot, ripe orange, and cocoa. On the palate, the aromas found on the nose are complemented by flavours of citrus cream and nectarine. Dry and textured, pair this a variety of cheese, mussels, or vegetable risotto.
Method
Made from 100% Chardonnay, the grapes come from vines grown primarily on Elder loam soils underlain by “riverstones” deposited over thousands of years by the Arroyo Seco River. 50% malolactic fermentation in barrel and barrel fermented and aged 7 to 9 months in new to fifth-fill American, Hungarian and French oak barrels; stirred weekly until they were gently pumped out.
