The La Gerla estate is located at 320 metres above sea level, on the gentle slopes below Montalcino. This small wine estate has established itself as one of the great crùs in this territory in the heart of Tuscany. Sergio Rossi, a successful businessman purchased the property in 1976 and completely restructured the estate while respecting its original environment.  The estate originally belonged to the famous Biondi Santi family, the Biondi Santi family accredited for making Brunello what it is today.  La Gerla was officially created in 1978 and today there are 11.5 hectares under vine along with a team of experts who assist in crafting fine wine. This small wine estate has established itself as one of the great crùs in this territory in the heart of Tuscany.

Sergio Rossi passed away in July 2011.  His legacy continues through his team who embody his great attention to  quality and detail in the craft of growing grapes and making wine.

Tasting Notes

Intense red and black berry fruit, spice and leather aromas.  Rich and suave on the palate with concentrated tart blackberry fruit, cherry and plum, cedar, leather, spice, salty minerals, licorice, balsam herbs and violet floral notes abound.  Firm tannins and juicy acidity.  Layered and complex; this well structured wine will continue to develop for years to come.  Should you want to open it now, decant it and enjoy it with aged sheep cheese, roasted meats, game or hearty pasta dishes.

Method

Made from 20 year old 100% Sangiovese Grosso grown on south /east facing slopes at 270-320 meters above the sea level.   The vines are aggressively pruned to limit production to very few bunches per plant, harvested by hand and sorted before fermentation.   The grapes are softly pressed grapes and fermented in temperature-controlled tanks at 30°C with a  15 day maceration.  The wine is racked twice a year. The ages for a minimum of 24 months in Slavonian oak barrels of various capacities: 50 and 100 HL and then further in bottle, 8 months before release.  The annual production for this wine is just 6170 bottles.
