Since 1994 Torbreck has been creating exceptional Rhone style red and white wines reflecting the very best vineyards in Australia’s Barossa Valley. Here is a European sense of tradition; many of the vines that were planted in the 1840s – many of them Rhone varieties such as Shiraz, Grenache, Mourvédre – still thrive and bear fruit of unique concentration and flavour. Torbreck pays tribute to these vineyards with minimal intervention, creating wines of richness, structure and length that age gracefully. The multi-generational growers, whose descendants arrived here nearly two centuries ago, are the backbone of Torbreck’s winemaking aspirations.
Torbreck has had the opportunity to invest in the protection of some of the Barossa’s most precious vineyards, after accepting fruit from them over many years. The historic Hillside Vineyard at Lyndoch, The Laird Vineyard in the sub-region of Marananga and the Greenock Keller Vineyard owned by the Schultz family, are all now under the custodianship of Torbreck.
Torbreck is the name of a forest near Inverness, Scotland. You’ll find more than a passing nod to the Celts in the wine naming conventions including this tribute to the foresters of this rugged high country.
Tasting Notes
Lifted red, black and blue fruits of red cherry, raspberry coulis, blueberry conserve and wild blackberry and blackcurrant. There is
a spicy edge showing cardamom, star anise and Chinese five spice. Soft caressing tannins and voluptuous mouthfeel from plump
Shiraz berries gives this wine a posture that belies its pedigree. The poise and piquancy of the fruit sitting on top of the structured mouthfeel provides confidence to cellar for 5-10 years. Serve at 16C and match with a range of foods from pizza to barbecue.
Method
Woodcutter’s Shiraz receives the very best viticultural and winemaking treatment. The fruit is sourced from hand-harvested and hand-tended, low-yielding vines from various sub-regions throughout the Barossa Valley (Maranga, Greenock, Seppeltsfield, Gomersal, Moppa, Lyndoch, Ebenerzer). The grapes are open fermented, gently basket pressed and aged on the fine lees for 12 months in large format seasoned barrels and foudres.Â
