The winery we know today as Foradori was founded in 1901 Northern Italy’s Alto Adige region.  It was in 1939 that Vittorio Foradori purchased the winery and began a family run wine estate that is now in its fourth generation.  In 1984, Vittorio’s granddaughter, Elisabetta Foradori, after having completed her enological studies, joined the team and completed her first vintage at the family estate. She is widely credited with helping revive the popularity and quality of the Teroldego grape through masal selection. In 2002 the estate began it’s conversion to biodynamic farming and received Demeter status in 2009.  In 2012 Elizabetta’s son, Emilio joined his mother in winemaking at the estate.  Here in an impressive landscape, surrounded by the Dolomiti mountains, they cultivate native grapes on both alluvial and calcarous clay soils.  They produce soulful wines that show purity and freshness, allowing indigenous grapes to shine and express this unique terroir.

Tasting Notes

Pale ruby in the glass.  Fresh red berry notes with a hint of black fruit and pepper.  The palate is juicy and fresh with bright acidity, crunchy red fruit and minerality.  A subtle and pleasantly bitter quality makes this a wonderful wine to enjoy with high acid food and bitter greens.  If you are unfamiliar with this grape, it is related to Syrah and has a similar dark inky colour, a peppery taste and firm, but not astringent tannins.   This wine is easy and unpretentious and extremely gulpable, especially when served slightly chilled.  Enjoy with seared tuna, charcuterie, pizza.

Method

The idea of creating a light Teroldego to celebrate the summer was something that interested Azienda Agricola Foradori for some time but it wasn’t until the hail storms of August 2017, which destroyed 40% of the harvest that Elizabetta decided to have a go and so, Lezèr was produced for the first time in 2017 and has been a hugely popular style since its inaugural release.  From the small amount of fruit harvested that vintage Lezer was born; a light fresh red made via a short maceration.  This wine was born with the spirit of experimentation and continues to develop in this way;  the use of amphorae, wood, cement and steel and never leaving the grapes on the skins for more than 24 hours.   Lezer is made from 100% Teroldego, spontaneously fermented in various tanks, unfined and unfiltered with low sulfites.
