At DeMorgenzon, the slopes rise up to 400 m above sea level with the ocean as a backdrop. Rather than refer to their vineyard as ‘mountain’ terrain, they prefer to be known as ‘garden vineyards’. In Spring specially chosen wild flowers flourish between the vines. They have no doubt that a bio-diverse and ecologically sensitive environment produces infinitely better grapes. To add to the beauty of the landscape, Baroque music is piped through the vineyards as it is believed that the power of music positively influences the ripening process.

Tasting Notes

This show stopping white displays effusive aromas of white flower, stone fruit, honey and toast which erupt into opulent flavours of pear, orange blossom, caramel and spice. It’s a world class wine offering that strikes a brilliant balance between lush fruit and crisp, mouth-watering acidity.

Method

The grapes were picked in three different passes in order to achieve optimum ripeness and balance in the final wine. The grapes were handpicked in the early morning hours, with bunch selection done in the vineyard. Fruit was cooled down and then gently pressed, whole bunch, and the juice was settled overnight without the use of settling enzymes. Fermentation occurred naturally in French oak barrels (20% new), using indigenous yeasts, with about 20% of the volume completing malolactic fermentation. The wine was aged on its lees in barrel for 10 months, without batonage.

Our Thoughts

This wine, vintage after vintage, remains one of my favourite wines in the shop. Winemaking, much like love, can be an inherently risky endeavour. This is why I marvel at winemakers who choose to use wild yeast fermentation. There is something ridiculously human about putting ones hopes, dreams, and even future happiness into something so far from our control. In my opinion, some of the best wines come from this place of vulnerability.

I just opened the 2016 … what a feast of flavour! Worth waiting a couple of years for. A big wine with prominent tones of honey, ripe pineapple and oh so much more. Delicious.
