This wine is a produced by Heitz Cellar, an iconic Napa Valley Estate founded in 1961. Heitz Cellar’s legacy runs as deep as the roots throughout the Napa Valley; a winery legend that has helped shape the history of Napa Valley winemaking. In the late 1950s, pioneering vintner Joe Heitz ushered in Napa’s modern era with his iconic, globally celebrated wines, including Napa Valley’s first vineyard-designated Cabernet Sauvignon, the renowned Heitz Cellar Martha’s Vineyard. Fifty-eight years of the Heitz family’s dedication to viticulture, stewardship, and classic winemaking maintained the winery’s notoriety as a benchmark amongst its peers in California and Europe.
In April 2018, Heitz Cellar entered an exciting new chapter as this rich legacy was passed into the hands of the Lawrence family, whose deep roots in agriculture and commitment to the same core values of fine winemaking made it a perfect match. The wines are made with an unwavering commitment to quality from organically farmed, 100% Napa Valley fruit, and a commitment to the sustainability of Napa Valley.
Tasting Notes
The nose is vibrant and bright with classic Cabernet Sauvignon aromas of red and black fruit, along with fresh notes of eucalyptus. The palate follows the nose and finishes with a thread of softer tannins, making this a very approachable and easy drinking Napa Valley Cabernet. This style of the wine harkens back to the classic historical style of Napa Cabernet, reminiscent of the era of Joe Heitz and Leon Brendel- food-friendly, fruit-driven and featuring a juicy acidity.
Method
The Cooper’s Reed Cabernet Sauvignon is a pure expression of the grape – a contemporary Napa wine made with a historical perspective. The team at Heitz Cellars is incredibly fortunate to source fruit from vineyards in some of the most ideal grape-growing regions of the Napa Valley – this 100% Cabernet Sauvignon is handcrafted with 81% fruit from Rutherford (of Rutherford Dust fame), 13% coming off Howell Mountain, and 6% from St. Helena. After a gentle fermentation, the wine was aged for ten months in old-school upright neutral casks sealed with decorative reeds- hence the name.
