Built in 1881 by the Harvey Brothers, this mothballed distillery began production again in 2001. Using equipment dating back to the Victorian ages, that is about the only old-fashioned thing about Bruichladdich (brook-lad-ee). Innovative and creative, Bruichladdich has an open minded approach to the barrels used for finishing their scotches (including first growth Bordeaux, Cognac and Amarone casks), as well as modern packaging that holds their spirits.
Bruichladdich’s Islay series is focused on displaying the terroir of the island- the belief that the soil, climate, local weather patterns, geogrpahic orientations and natural influences all influence the final flavour profile of the whisky.
Tasting Notes
From the distillery: “Delicate cereal notes open up into honeyed porridge, lemon merringue pie and malt sweets. Finishes with apricot jam and melted fudge.”
Method
Using the Concerto variety of barley, grown on seven different farms across the island of Islay, Bruichladdich is one of two distilleries working with farmers to use Islay barley for their single malt. Distilled in 2013, this is a single vintage expression. Aged in 75% first fill American Oak casks and 25% European wine oak casks- a combination of Ribera del Duero, Syrah and Paulliac. Non chill filter, no added colouring, bottled at 50%. Aged eight years.
