Built in 1881 by the Harvey Brothers, this mothballed distillery began production again in 2001. Using equipment dating back to the Victorian ages, that is about the only old-fashioned thing about Bruichladdich (brook-lad-ee). Innovative and creative, Bruichladdich has an open minded approach to the barrels used for finishing their scotches (including first growth Bordeaux, Cognac and Amarone casks), as well as modern packaging that holds their spirits.
Tasting Notes
From the distillery: “Nose: Sweet stone fruit and a delicate floral perfume on the nose. Hints of smoke come through with time. Initially peaches in syrup, dried apricots, honeyed melon and ripe pineapple.
Palate: On the palate the warmth and supple texture of this dram elegantly grace the palate and bring together a balance of light peat smoke and ripe fruit. Beneath the delicate smoke comes earthy notes of leather and boot polish. The oak brings strength and sweet vanilla, chocolate and citrus to compliment the waves of fruit from the spirit.
Finish: A dram you wish would last forever, the wonderful marine minerality and earthy smoke linger on the palate with a citrus twang.”
Method
Limited release, 100% Islay grown barley (concerto, propino, publican and oxbridge) peated to 40 ppm. A combination of sherry butts and first and second fill American whiskey barrels then recasked into first fill Sauternes casks for finishing. Aged nine years, bottled on site with Islay spring water. Non-chill filtered with no added colouring.
