Bodegas J. A. Calvo Casajus is located in Ribera del Duero.  For generations, the Calvo and Casajús families have cultivated grapevines and produced their own artisan wines, initially for their own consumption in old cave style wineries that today, are still preserved.  Today the estate is under the helm of José Alberto Calvo Casajús, who was born in Quintana del Pidio, Ribera del Duero and brought up in this winemaking culture.  His enthusiasm and passion for everything that surrounds the world of wine encouraged him to found Bodegas J. A. Calvo Casajús in 1993; a modern company, equipped with the most advanced techniques, but with a deep-rooted family spirit and that preserves the most genuine of the Ribera del Duero wines.   

Tasting Notes

The wine is a brilliant cherry with a garnet hue in the glass.  The nose is fresh, fruity with notes of cherries and ripe raspberries that combine with soft, fine toasted notes from barrel aging.  The wine has a broad and mouthfilling palate; smooth with lots of concentration.  Overall vibrant, ripe red fruit and toasted notes combine perfectly with the roundness and creaminess of the tannins.  A balanced and harmonious wine that invites you back for another sip.  Pairs well with cheeses, sausages, stews, and red meats.

Method

This is a wine made with 100% Tinta del País (Tempranillo) grapes from vineyards planted by Jose Alberto in his youth over 30 years ago in his hometown of Quintana del Pidio, located in the heart of the Ribera del Duero region. This wine aims to highlight the freshness of the red fruits from the variety and the delicacy of a well-made red wine.  After harvest, the grapes were destemmed in the winery and cooled to a temperature of 5°C, fermented in small 5,000-liter stainless steel tanks, which facilitate the temperature control. After fermentation, the wine rested for 12 months in 500-liter second-year American and French oak barrels, perfectly blending the soft toasted notes of the barrel with the bright red fruits of the wine.
