Chateau Frombauge is located in Saint-Christophe-des-Bardes, Saint Emilion and is a Grand Cru classified wine.  It is owned by Bernard Magrez, who owns 42 vineyards in Spain, Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Uruguay and Italy.  Four of his vineyards are in Bordeaux; Chateau Pape Clémente (Grand Cru Classé of Graves), Chateau La Tour Carnet (Grand Cru Classé of 1855 in Haut Médoc) and Clos Peyraguey (Premier Grand Cru Classé of 1855 in Sauternes).  He acquired the prestigious  Château Fombrauge in 2012.

Tasting Notes

A fragrant red with notes of plum, ripe cherry, violet and mocha.  The palate is medium bodied, with good fruit concentration, fine grained tannins and a pleasing freshness that enhances the sensory experience and makes this a great food wine.

Method

The 2021 vintage in this appellation saw a variety of climatic conditions; the spring was warm and dry which meant an early flowering and budding, but later the vines had some hydric requirements, so careful irrigation was needed.  The summer saw some storms that required careful monitoring to curb vine disease and the final push towards ripening saw increased heat.  Careful vinayrd management and low yields made for quality wine.

This is a blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc from Saint Emilion.  The grapes are hand harvested in small crates, only the best bunches are selected.  The bunches are sorted and destemmed at the winery, and gravity fed into a combination of 40hl and 80hl stainless steel, wood and concrete vats for pre-fermentation maceration that lasts about 4-8 days followed by fermentation with gentle pump overs. After the primary alcoholic fermentation the wine undergoes malo-lactic fermenation.
