Château La Nerthe is one of the oldest estates in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and dates from 1560. It is has 220 acres (89 hectare) of vineyards surrounding the the château top the renowned “La Crau” plateau. The terroir is typical of the region; with sandy-clay soils covered by a layer of ‘galets’ – large, round, well-worn stones that were carried down from the Alps by glaciers during the last ice age. All the 13 permitted primary varietals are planted here. There is also a a nearby wood and one of the few natural springs of Châteauneuf-du-Pape which creates a unique microclimate of warm days and cool nights contributing to well aromatically intense, elegant and well structured wines.
Tasting Notes
Bright garnet with a purple hue. The aromas are fruit, spicy and herbal; notes of ripe cherries, strawberries, and herbs. The palate is full and well structured with ripe tannins fine grained tannins and balanced aicidty. The flavours extend to a long finish with notes of mint and pepper. It is always recommended to decant if you want to drink this wine shortly after the vintage. It is a wine that has the cellaring potential of a decade or more however. Enjoy with roast meats, game and dishes that contain fresh herbs.
Method
A blend of organic Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah with a tiny amount of Cinsault from vines that are about 40 years old. The grapes are hand harvested and sorted on tables, then put into vats for almost 4 weeks with regular pump overs and punch downs. After fermentation, the wines are racked into oak vats for malolactic fermentation. The cuvée is then aged in large French oak casks and barrels for 12 months before blending. Bottling takes place 6 months later.
