The Lagille family have been vignerons in Treslon, in the Vallée de L’Ardre since 1818. Today, the estate is run by siblings Maud and Vincent Lagille who are known for their innovative and sustainable approach to viticulture and sparkling winemaking.
Domaine Lagille converted to organics in 2019 and also has the Haute Valeur Environnementale certification. Their 7.20 hectares of vineyards are mainly planted to Pinot Meunier (55%), followed by Chardonnay (30%) and Pinot Noir (15%), producing around 50,000 bottles per yea.
A unique feature of the estate is that they train their Meunier vines using the “cordon royat” system usually reserved for Grand Cru vineyards, which ensures low yields and greater concentration of quality. They vinify parcel-by-parcel, use minimal dosage, and minimal oak to highlight the richness and complexity of the clay-limestone terroir of the Montagne de Reims
Tasting Notes
Simple and elegant, L’Inattendue offers both a beautiful effervescence, an olfactory finesse and an aromatic blend combining roundness, fruit and freshness.
Method
West of Reims, you’ll find Domaine Lagille amongst the scattered vineyards in the picturesque Ardre Valley within the Montagne de Reims wine region of Champagne. Located on the moderately steep slopes, the vineyards of the Ardre Valley are on both sides of the river and its tributaries and are divided into plots of varying sizes in around twenty communes. The clay-limestone and clay-marl soils, as well as the frequent spring frosts, favor the cultivation of the Meunier grape variety, which represents 75% of the grape varieties. L’Inattendue comes exclusively from the village of Treslon in Champagne’s Vallée de L’Ardre. It is made entirely from Meunier grapes; the majority grape variety on the estate. It is an Extra Brut Champagne with 1.5 g/L of RS.
