The Grattamacco winery was founded in 1977 by Piermario Meletti Cavalleri and his wife Paola Cavallari. Located between the towns of Castagneto Carducci and Bolgheri. Grattamacco was the second wine estate in Bolgheri, after Sassicaia (which as of 2013 has its own appellation, Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC). This certainly speaks to the significance and quality of this small Tuscan region and its wines.
In 2002 Piermario sold the estate to Claudio Tipa, a native Sicilian and former industrialist and founder of Collemassari Wine Estates. Claudio Tipa has an enviable wine empire; owning the renowned Tuscan wine estates, Poggio di Sotto and Tenuta San Giorgio in the Montalcino region and Colle Massari in the Maremma region. His wife Maria and sister Maria-Iris work alongside him.
Grattamacco is located on a hill between Castagneto Carducci and Bolgheri and enjoys a breathtaking panorama of the Tuscan coast. The farm extends over 80 hectares, of which a good 29 hectares are planted with vines and fourteen with olives. Surrounded by 1,200 hectares of woodland, the estate is considered a model for the entire wine-growing zone.
Tasting Notes
Aromas of black cherry and currant, iron and cedar. The palate has an abundance of blackcurrants, pepper and Mediterranean scrub. A generous wine with a creamy attack, velvety refined tannins leading to a silky finish of impressive length. The perfect integrity of the grapes at harvest has given a refined balsamic aroma and richness in structure to this wine; typical of the best vintages of this cru. It goes well with game, roast, braised and stewed red meats, and medium-age cheese.
Method
A blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Cabernet Franc. This wine is produced from the first vineyard grown in Bolgher, a two-hectare plot of head-pruned (“alberello” in Italian) vines. The vines are 15 years old and planted at the same distance to share the same light and loam-clay soil portions. The vineyard is located at a low 50 meters above sea level and 10 km from the sea on predominately clay soils. The well ventilated is naturally suited to organic viticulture. Organic farming allows a low and well-balanced production of 1 kg of grapes per plant. Harvesting and other works on the vines are done manually. The Cabernet varieties are harvested the same day altogether, creating a blend that ferments spontaneously with extended maceration in stainless steel. This wine ages 18 months in new/used barrels.
Our Thoughts
One sniff of this wine could transport you to Central Italy; it has the aromas of Tuscany dialed in perfectly. Expect chewy cherries, black currant, savory herbs, dusty library shelves and more. While this Super Tuscan wine is drinking wonderfully now, it has the potential to age for many years and will certainly reward the patient customer with increased complexity and an even silkier texture down the line. What a wonderful gift this would be for someone starting a wine collection!
