The Ligneres family is bringing much needed attention to the Languedoc of southern France. The story is an unexpected one. Both the husband and wife have a background in medicine, and like many other traditional winemakers have wine running through their veins. Andre is a general practitioner and Suzette is a pharmacist. Together with their children, they manage La Baronne estate. The family is very much hands-on—they utilize dry-farming, hand harvesting, and have been certified organic and biodynamic.
Tasting Notes
This is a lighter style red, delicious served slightly chilled and ideal for warm weather drinking. Fresh and fruity with notes of crushed strawberry, fragrant fresh herbs. A delicious and fluid palate supported by a discreet tannic structure. Perfect with Mediterranean cuisine, tapas, appetizers, grilled fish, and pasta alla puttanesca, fresh goat cheese and fruit chutney, strawberry salad with lime zest.
Method
75% Grenache Gris and 25% Mourvèdre from vines that are Demeter certified biodynamic, growing on on gravel terraces on clay-limestone soil. The grapes are hand harvested, sorted and destemmed before fermentation. The Grenache Gris was fermented in terracotta vessles, 6 months maceration. The Mourvedre was fermented in stainless steel tanks. Both were wild yeast ferments. Malo-lactic fermentation after alcoholic fermentation. The wines were blended in Ferbuary following the harvest and bottled unfiltered and unfined.
