Bodegas Piqueras is a 4th generation wine producer in Almansa dating back to 1915 when grandfather Luis Piqueras López began by selling his own wine in bulk in a small winery in the village of “Los Aljibes” 10 km from Almansa.  He evntually opened two offices in Almansa and he sold his wine directly there.  In 1927 Grandfather Luis Piqueras literally wins lottery!  He plated 8 pesetas and his winnings allowed him to buy a plot of land on Campanario Street, where the new winery was built in Almansa and the family legacy has continued on ever since.

Tasting Notes

Aromas of ripe black fruit mix, baking spices like cinnamon, clove, vanilla and cocoa on the nose.  The palate is concentrated and rich with lots of sweet fruit and warming spice flavours.  The finely structured tannins and depth of flavour make this a wonderful wine to pair with rich dished and intense flavours.

Method

The grapes are sourced from old bush vines grown at 800-850 m ASL on poor rocky soils.  The three varieties are hand harvested seperately based on their individual ripening times; the last variery harvested is Monastrell.  The grapes undergo a 2 day cold maceration to extract colour and preserve fresh, fruity aromas before the alcoholic fermentation in temperature controlled tanks.  After fermentation the wine rests another 14 months in new medium toast French barriques and second and third fill American oak barrels of 300 liters.

This wine is indeed a big full “grandfather” wine but oh so yummy. Great balance. Heavy on the Grenache so a touch of green grass mid-back palate. Has tannin but not overpowering, unless you dislike tannin. Can’t wait till fall to try it with braised beef or mushrooms. For now, sneaking it onto the table for heavy veggie dishes and pasta. Oh who am I kidding- won’t last until fall.
