Tenuta delle Terre Nere is an estate located on the northern slopes of Etna, within the hilly belt that extends between Solicchiata and Randazzo, historically the area recognized as the finest in the appellation for fine red wines. Marco De Grazia owns this iconic Etna estate and released its first commercial vintage in 2002 making them a pioneer in the region.  The estate consists of approximately 45 hectares divided into 29 plots and in nine “contradas” (sub-zones/crus).  The soils differ very much from cru to cru, and even within the crus themselves. The same is true of the altitudes and age of the vines; the vineyards are mainly between 600 and 1000 metres above sea level and the vines between 50 and 100 years old.  He is fortunate to own a small plot, less than one hectare of vines, that is over 140 years old! These ancient vines survived phylloxera, and are therefore ungrafted.

Marco de Garzia was once best known for introducing Americans to great Italian wines as an importer, but over the years he has become a reference for the Etna DOC.

Tasting Notes

Compelling aromas of Mediterranean scrub, juniper, dark, exotic spice, eucalyptus and lavender.  Medium bodied and plush on the palate with lots of concentration, red fruit and minerality.  There is a lovely freshness and depth to this refined wine. Pairs well with a wide variety of pasta dishes with tomato sauce, grilled or roasted vegetables, pork or duck.

“I would say it truly has charme; more stylish than our Etna Rosso with a depth and character reminiscent of our Calderara Sottana (excepting, perhaps, the extra layers that old vines deliver). It was born elegant and will become more subtly so as it ages; possessing the weightless poise of youth and the promise of a greater finesse to come. It is, indeed, a wine I’m very proud to have crafted, one that yearns to encompass all that is Tenuta delle Terre Nere.” – Marco de Grazia

Method

Made from Nerello Mascalese grown in the Calderara Sottana, though this is not the same wine as the Calderara Sottana bottling which comes from the exclusively from the fruit of the ungrafted pre-phylloxera vines on the estate.

This is a cuvée from one exceptionally gifted vineyard in Calderara, called Bellacolonna; it was here that, after sadly uprooting parcels of half abandoned and decrepit old vines, Terre Nere planted some of the first vineyards.  This is an exceptionally fine vineyard and this vintage was also outstanding.   The Nerello Mascalese grapes grow on black pumice, solid volcanic rock; the stoniest Contrada on
the north slope of the Etna Appellation at an elevation of 600-650 meters a.s.l.  The average age of the vines are between 50 and 100 years old.  Harvested the first two weeks in October and fermented at a controlled temperature of 28-30° C.  The wine undergoes spontaneous malolactic fermentation and aging in French oak barriques and tonneaux and bottled after 14 months of wood aging and 1 month in steel.

It has benefited from 10% aging in new oak.
