Gavi is not very well known outside of it’s hilly home in Piedmont, Italy though I hope it starts to get noticed.  The grape is Cortese, a thin skinned white that has the potential, when well cared for, to make nuanced and mineral driven wines of great character. Think apple, meyer lemon, melon and almond notes that intertwine with a seashell like minerality on the palate and fresh acidity.  Villa Sparina’s Gavi di Gavi smells of stone fruit and citrus; its medium bodied palate is bright and lively, showing fresh herbs, mineral character and white pepper. I love the purity of this white wine which has me craving a plate of fresh basil pesto pasta or seafood dishes garnished with lemon and parsley.
