The Sella & Mosca winery and estate was founded in 1899 by a family of northern Italian adventurers, Vittorio Sella, a Piemontese mountaineer, photographer and engineer, and his brother-in-law, Mr. Mosca, a lawyer.  They saw the potential in the region of Alghero, northwest Sardinia for viticulture.  Today it is one of one of the largest wine estates in Europe totaling about 650 hectares, of which 542 hectares are vineyards making it home to Europe’s largest continuous vineyard.  It’s quite impressive!

Sella & Mosca has vineyards in Gallura (in the northeast) producing top quality Vermentino di Gallura and a property in Sulcis (southwest) producing acclaimed Carignano di Sulcis.  Sella & Mosca is known for its excellent price-to-quality ratio and its wines appeal to casual wine drinkers to sommeliers and anyone in between.  Sella & Mosca’s wines have put the island of Sardinia on the viticultural map.

Tasting Notes

A wine that expresses intensity and warmth, combining delicate floral and ripe fruit notes with the more classic ones of mediterranean vegetation. The brilliant ruby red color heralds an ample and complex bouquet, in which violet, rose, cherry and currant encounter elegant nuances of spice. In the mouth the wine is full, robust, warm and generous yet well balanced, fresh and deep. The finish is persistent, with a silky texture. Enjoy with grilled lamb or beef kebabs or burgers.

Method

Cannonau is the oenological nexus of Sardinia and also other parts of the Mediterranean where the grape is known as Grenache or Garnacha.  This heat loving grape grows in both the warm sandy seaside vineyards and the harsh and rocky inland soils of the hills.  A varietal and a wine that symbolizes Sardinia, Cannonau is one of the crown jewels of Sella & Mosca. Cultivated with extra care, it enjoys the warm, sandy soils it grows in, swept clean by the prevailing northeast wind.  The juice is fermented in stainless steel, part of the wine then ages in large oak barrels for 8 months, while some rests in stainless steel and some in concrete before bottling.
