Tenuta delle Terre Nere is an estate located on the northern slopes of Etna, within the hilly belt that extends between Solicchiata and Randazzo, historically the area recognized as the finest in the appellation for fine red wines. Marco De Grazia owns this iconic Etna estate and released its first commercial vintage in 2002 making them a pioneer in the region.  The estate consists of approximately 45 hectares divided into 29 plots and in nine “contradas” (sub-zones/crus).  The soils differ very much from cru to cru, and even within the crus themselves. The same is true of the altitudes and age of the vines; the vineyards are mainly between 600 and 1000 metres above sea level and the vines between 50 and 100 years old.  He is fortunate to own a small plot, less than one hectare of vines, that is over 140 years old! These ancient vines survived phylloxera, and are therefore ungrafted.

Marco de Garzia was once best known for introducing Americans to great Italian wines as an importer, but over the years he has become a reference for the Etna DOC.

Tasting Notes

Brilliant ruby in the glass with a penetrating bouquet of ripe red fruit and spice.  The palate is full, well structured and complete with fine rounded tannins and an overall seamless texture.  Pair with meats and strong cheeses.

Method

This bottling is an Etna Rosso from the “Grand Cru” of San Lorenzo.  It comes from 8 hectares of goblet trained vineyards in the district of the same name in the municipality of Randazzo. In some plots the vines are more than 70 years old, the altitude is 750 meters above sea level, the soil is almost pure volcanic ash.  The terroir of Contrada San Lorenzo originated from lava flows and volcano-clastic deposits related to the effusive and explosive activity of the Elliptic volcano between 60,000 and 15,000 years ago. San Lorenzo is the Contrada that marks the North West border of the D.O.C. Etna and therefore has the coldest climate of the D.O.C. This climate combined with soils especially rich in ash, creates a unique and unrepeatable combination.

Nerello Mascalese grapes are harvested at the end of October fermented at a controlled temperature of 28-30° C.  The wine undergoes a spontaneous malolactic fermentation and is aged in French oak barriques and tonneaux for 14 months followed by 1 month of resting in stainless steel.

Only 8000 bottles produced annually.
