Biodynamic
Biodynamics is a holistic, ecological, and ethical approach to farming, gardening, food, and nutrition, rooted in the work of philosopher and scientist Dr. Rudolf Steiner. Involving the same requirements as organic (no use of any chemicals, synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, or fungicides), it also includes the integration of animal feeds, perennial plants, flowers and trees, water features, and an emphasis on composting. One principle of Biodynamic farming has to do with treating the farm as a living organism; self-contained, self-sustaining, and following the cycles of nature. Due to this, the use of foreign materials to help with pest control or to improve fertility is extremely reduced. Farms are also required to maintain at least 10% of total acreage as a biodiversity set-aside; riparian zones, wetlands, grasslands, and forests are all considered an integral part of the life of the farm.
