One of the oldest estates in the Médoc that dates back to t he 16th century where is was passed down from generation to generation.  The modern estate has been in the Borie family since 1978.  The Borie family are very much a wine business family who have deep connections in managing prestigious wine estates in Bordeaux.  Today Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste in Pauillac is still in the capable hands of this family.

Tasting Notes

Grand-Puy-Lacoste 2019 is once again remarkable by the high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon in its blend: 83% which expresses all the character and typicity of the fine gravel soils of Pauillac.  Intense purple colour, deep and bright. Powerful aromas of cherry and black fruits on the nose; the wine is ripe but still very fresh.  Spice and menthol compliment the fruit.  The palate is dense and precise; there is a pleasing aromatic brightness and fresh quality.  The whole is supported by tannins which combine power and elegance already in great harmony.  The wine expresses all the richness and complexity that Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste Pauillac is known for.

Method

A blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon and 17% Merlot from vines that are close to 40 years old planted around the Chateau.  The farming practices are done with respect for the environment; mechanical ploughing of the soil and spraying is kept to the absolute effective minimum; the vineyard is “High Environmental Value” certified.   The harvest is carried out by hand, the grapes are sorted at the winery before and after the destemming process.  The grapes undergo a long period of maceration (about 3 weeks), ferment and are aged in French oak barrels (75% new barrels each vintage) for between 16 to 18 months depending on the vintage.

This wine is a 5th Grand Cru Classé Pauillac,  located on the Left Bank of the Gironde estuary.
