The Gaja winery is synonomous with excellence and innovation in the world of fine wines. The winery was established in Barbaresco, in the Langhe region of Piemonte in 1859 by Giovanni Gaja and has grown from a humble family venture to an internationally acclaimed estate and recognizable brand. Gaja’s wines and reputation has contributed to the popularity and success of other producers from this part of Italy.
Gaja’s roots are in the Langhe region, where they cultivate about 250 acres of vineyards the districts of Barbaresco and Barolo. In the 1994, the Gaja family expanded its winemaking footprint by acquiring the Pieve Santa Restituta estate in Tuscany’s Montalcino area to craft Brunello. Shortly thereafter they ventured into the southern Tuscan Maremma and founded Ca’Marcanda, in Bolgheri where the 150 acres are planted to a diverse range of international grape varietals, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Syrah.
Gaja is commitment to quality, tradition, and continuous innovation.
Tasting Notes
The 2020 vintage wines have precise, complex fruit expressions and clean, elegant aromas. The Conteisa Barolo has intense aromas of cherry compote, mint, marzipan, sweet and spicy notes of ginger, and pepper. In the mouth it is delicate, ethereal and elegant, with ripe tannins, notes of wild mint and a long, lingering finish.
Method
Though Gaja’s roots are in Barbaresco, they have increased their holdings over the years to include prestigious plots in nearby Barolo. The Piedmontese word “conteisa” which means “contest” in English, recalls the dispute which lasted for over 100 years between the two municipalities of La Morra and Barolo for the possession of the acclaimed Cerequio vineyard area. The dispute was finally settled in 1275 granting the cru to the village of La Morra. This wine is from the Conteisa single vineyard, located in the Cerequoi cru within the municipality of La Morra. It site faces south and consists of clay, calcareous marl soils and sand. The Nebbiolo grapes from this stellar location are fermented in oak and age for 30 months in oak before release.
In 2020, rain was atypically distributed, concentrating in summer rather than winter and spring. Most winter rain fell in November, including early snowfall on the 15th, mitigating the drought from December to March. Winter temperatures were mild, especially in
January 2020. Cold temperatures below freezing arrived mid-March and lasted a month, but no frost damage occurred. Apart from heat peaks in late May, August, and mid-September, May to early October had alternating warm days and thunderstorms followed by cooler days. Despite frequent summer thunderstorms, none of the vineyards were damaged by hail for the first time in years. Significant temperature variations in September and October favored the color, aromas, and health of the grapes. Nebbiolo’s harvest started on September 18th and finished on October 8th with great satisfaction.
