Few distilleries have gained as much prestige and momentum in such a short period of time like Kavalan has. Kavalan takes its name from Yilan Countys old name, the area at which it is located in north-eastern Taiwan. Founded in 2005 by Mr. Tien-Tsai Lee, the entrepreneur knew that in order to compete with the global whisky heavyweights, they had to create a spirit of exceptional quality. Calling in no other than renowned Dr. Jim Swan (the Einstein of whisky) they set into motion a plan for production, as well as future maturation to ensure Kavalan’s longevity.
Kavalan added their Select line to their core range starting in 2020 with “Select No. 1” which was quickly followed by the “Select No. 2” These expressions are priced competitively and are the ideal introduction to the brand.
Tasting Notes
From the distillery: “Flavour: begins powerfully with charming floral, grassy aromas and gentle vanilla blending with hints of delightfully woody and spicy notes in rich layers.
Palate: Smooth, rounded mouthfeel, and with rich character, suitable for daily drinking with excellent palatability. A long and fragrant finish.”
Method
Kavalan’s team of skilled blenders carefully select a range of exceptional refill casks to create a truly unique whisky that showcases Taiwan’s premier distillery. The Select No. 2 specifically focuses on showcasing the whisky’s tropical fruit character and the barrels used highlight and enhance those features.
