The Nolet distillery was founded in 1691, at this point, the distillery was focused on producing Jenever: a highly aromatic Dutch spirit renowned for both its flavour and medicinal properties. Over 300 years later, the Nolet distillery is still thriving and is currently managed by the 10th and 11th generations of Nolet distillers.
When Carolus Nolet took control of the distillery in 1979, he was eager to expand their portfolio and modernize the distillery’s offerings. After a business trip to the United States and witnessing the cocktail culture there, Carolus was convinced that the Nolet distillery had to create a vodka that lacked the harshness that he found in most available. Carolus felt that the harshness of most vodkas was largely due to their lack of richness and drew inspiration for his vodka from the family’s oldest coal-fired copper pot still: Ketel One.
Tasting Notes
From the distillery: Fresh, with hints of honey and citrus. Lively, with a signature silky softness and a long finish.
Method
Meant to be colourless, odourless and neutral Vodka can be made from many different base ingredients, but traditionally cereal grains or potatoes are used. Fermentation takes place (water+yeast+base ingredient) which creates the base alcoholic liquid The base liquid is then distilled into a “purer” spirit. Depending on the distillery’s preference, this process can be repeated again and again. After distillation the spirit is filtered through (typically) charcoal, removing any leftover impurities, leaving you with a clean product. This remaining product is high in alcohol and water is then added to bring the vodka down to a desired ABV, usually 40%.
Ketel One is made from 100% winter wheat. A blend of a continuous still and copper pot still.
