After a 160-year hiatus, 1995 saw Lochranza Distillery open and the Isle of Arran returned to whisky production. The hope was that they could capture the island’s unique whisky character…once referred to as “Arran Water”. Arran’s Machrie Moor line takes its name from the “mystical” peat bog on the west coast of the Isle. Amongst the bog lies Bronze age stone circles. One of the stone circles is known as Fingal’s Cauldron, named for the legendary warrior giant, where it holds a stone carved with a hole that Fingal is said to have tethered his favourite dog, Bran.
Machrie Moor is Arran Malts peated single malt, classically Arran, with a puff of smoke.

Tasting Notes

From the distillery:  “Nose: rich, sweet spiced notes from a well matured Arran Single Malt, backed with the strength of peat smoke and ripe citrus fruits.
Palate: Warming, balanced and rich. This whiskey embodies all the classic fresh style of Arran 10 year old with a twist of peat smoke in the tail. A sweetness lies beneath the spice and the layer of sweet smoke adds intensity.
Finish: Long lasting, memorable and intense.”

Method

Unlike Arrna’s other peated expressions from their sister distillery, Lagg, Machrie Moor is distilled at Lochranza distillery amongst the core range; Machrie Moor keeps Arran’s classic flavour profile, while adding in complexity from the peat smoke. Non chill filtered, aged entirely in bourbon cask and bottled at 46%.
