The Massolino family has been producing wine since 1896 in Serralunga d’Alba.  The estate goes by the name Azienda Agricola Massolino Vigna Rionda.  When great-grandfather Giovanni, founded the estate it was very much a traditional farm of the Langhe region; producing fruit and vegetables, raising livestock and making wine for personal consumption and bulk sales.  Today the estate’s main focus is high quality wine production.  Massolino wines are the result of meticulous attention in the vineyards, an essential approach in the cellar and respect for the land.

The soil composition, exposure, the age of the vines and climate are factors that influence the personality of every wine produced and it is particularly true when it comes to the highly sensitive Nebbiolo grape.  The Massolino vineyards grow in ideal locations.  The wines beautifully express the regional terroir.  In order to highlight the uniqueness of each vineyard and site, the grapes from different vineyards are vinified separately.

Tasting Notes

Straw yellow in the glass with aromas of tree fruit.  The palate is broad with a pleasing texture, ripe stone fruit is enlivened my minerality that brings freshness.  Langhe Chardonnays are deserving of their acclaim, this is a refined and well structured old world Chardonnay that is capable of evolving and improving with time in the bottle but is enjoyable soon after the vintage.  Serve between 12-15°C with fish or seafood, pastas in cream sauces, veal scallopini or a classic roast chicken dinner.

Method

Made from Chardonnay grapes planted in 1992 on medium textured calcareous soil.  The wine is partially vinified and aged in barriques, barrels and cement.  The wine ages on the lees for 12 months and rests in bottle another months before release.
