Catherine and François have a 45-hectare wine estate in Vallet, in the heart of the Muscadet Sèvre et Maine appellation area. Growing Muscadet’s one and only grape variety, Melon, is their passion. They are committed to an approach that respects the soil, the climate and the natural environment. Catherine Boulanger has been running the family estate since 1991. Her father Jean used to manage the vineyard for 30 years. Generosity and energy are qualities we can find in Catherine’s wines (maybe because that’s the way she is too !). Catherine and François grow classic Loire varietals such as Melon de Bourgogne (Muscadet), Gamay, Cabernet Franc, and Sauvignon Blanc, Moulin Camus produces IGP and Vin de France wines along with wines from other Loire appellations.
Tasting Notes
Pale yellow with green highlights and fine persistent bubbles that form a regular cordon on the surface. The nose is expressive and reveals lovely citrus notes with light brioche. The fine bubbles are pleasing on the palate. Notes of citrus, lemon curd and shortbread. This crémant makes an excellent aperitif, but it has all the character to compliment a variety of foods; from light fish dishes, cheeses and even to end an evening alongside some meringues, light pastries or nougatines.
Method
A blend of Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc Pinot Noir and Grolleau Gris. Grolleau Gris is a colour variant of Grolleau Noir, grapes that are indigenous to the Loire Valley and related to Gouais (the mother of Chardonnay), producing low-alcohol and high acid wines; ideal in a sparkling wine blend. The grapes are manually harvested and pressed, undergo a first fermentation in tank and a second in bottle. This wine is classified as a “crémant”, meaning that that it is made in the traditional sparkling wine method (similar to how Champagne is made), though the production rules are less stringent. You can expect the same amount of carbonation in a crémant as a Champagne however; tiny persistent bubbles! Crémant is required to age 9 months on the lees in bottle; while this one exceeds the minimum aging and rests for 12 months on the lees.
