Pico Maccario is a Barbera specialist located in the town of Mombaruzzo in the heart of Piedmont’s Barbera d’Asti DOCG. Brothers Pico and Vitaliano created the Pico Maccario brand in 1997 following four generations of selling the family grapes to other producers. Purity and balance is the goal of every Pico Maccario wine. The town of Mombaruzzo is located about an hour’s drive southeast of Asti itself and is home to the Pico Maccario winery. Here, brothers Pico and Vitaliano Maccario own 70 contiguous hectares, a rarity in the region. 60 of the 70 hectares are dedicated to Barbera. Lavignone takes its name from one of the 18th-century farmhouses located on the property.
Tasting Notes
A brilliant bright ruby colour with ethereal aromas of dried roses, violet, spice and vanilla. The palate is medium bodied, concentrated and structured displaying elegance, precision and a subtle depth. The wine is dry with medium plus acidity, good tannic presence and a lingering finish. A wine that would easily compliment roast meats, rich pasta dishes and aged cheeses.
Method
This Barolo from the commune of Serralunga d’Alba. The Nebbiolo grapes grow on hilly terrain at an altitude of 300-350 meters above sea level on limestone, gray marl and sandy soils. The grapes are hand harvested and carefully sorted followed by a delicate crushing and destemming before traditional fermentation; 15-18 days of gentle macaration with delicate pump overs. After alcoholic fermentation the wine ages for 18 months in Slavonian oak barrels of 25-35 hl and an additional refining in bottle before release for a total of 3 years aging from harvest to market.
