La Famille Bréchet of Château de Vaudieu (Chateauneuf du Pape) own other domaines in the Rhone Valley. Plateau des Chênes is one such estate and it is located in the Lirac appellation in the southern Rhone. Lirac is a little-known territory with impressive potential. It is a hot, sunny and dry area with poor soils that slow the vines vigor and result in low yields and excellent quality fruit. Laurent Bréchet Château de Vaudieu has been managing this estate since 2010 and the grapes are vinified in the cellars in the neighbouring Châteauneuf du Pape estate.
Tasting Notes
Ripe black fruit, garrigue, spice and a hint of smoke on the nose. The palate is round and dense with good fruit character while retaining a balancing freshness and elegance. This is an excellent red to pair with roast meats, stews, barbecue and firm cheeses.
Method
Plateau des chênes is an alluvial plateau of the old bed of the Rhône, made of Quaternary colluvium, red clay, Pliocene sand and quartzite pebbles. A terroir almost twin to Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Only a few kilometers and a river, the Rhône, separate them.
