Le Barroux is a small Provencal town located in the heart of the Vaucluse. Its twelfth century castle overhangs the stone-built village houses and picturesque alleys. In between the two famous mountains, the Mont Ventoux and the Dentelles de Montmirail, le Barroux is renowned as being an excellent tourist site, providing a magnificent view point. Nature surrounds the village, forests and fruit trees, intermingled with vines which paint a varying landscape of changing colors. The estate vineyards extend over 15 ha of the hillside, at an elevation of between 300 to 400 meters. It consists of 11 hectares of vines and 4 hectares of fruit trees and forest, on alternating terraces and slopes.
Phillip Gimel is the winemaker of the Saint Jean du Barroux wines. His wines express the terroir of the lower slopes of the famous Mont Ventoux near the road between Le Barroux and the Roman town of Vaison la Romaine. The talented Philippe keeps his yields very low in order to concentrate fruit flavour and de-stems every hand picked bunch. The wines are certified organic.
Tasting Notes
This is a concentrated fruit focused wine that beautifully expresses terroir. Aromas of just picked berries and plums. The palate is medium to full bodied, with medium acidity and fine tannins. Red and black juicy fruit, with spice and garrigue. This wine can be enjoyed now, but can further develop in the bottle. Enjoy this with cassoulet, sausages or grilled vegetables.
Method
The name La Source, comes from the natural artesian spring located near the vineyards of Saint Jean du Barroux. T his wine comes the Philippe’s approach to farming encourages low yields but there are scattered pockets of more vigorous vines which set more clusters with larger berries. Rather than drop fruit or try to force these vines to crop lower yields, they are harvested separately and used to make a more fruit-forward and frank expression of Philippe’s terroir. La Source is a blend of Grenache with Carignan and Cinsault growing at the foothills of the Mont Ventoux, it is also Philippe’s lowest plot. Harvested by hand and completely destemmed, before undergoing a short 7 day maceration and wild yeast fermentation and then aged for 18 months in enamel and concrete tanks and some used wood.
Our Thoughts
This wine is much-beloved by our staff- and for good reason! A blend of organic Grenache, Carignan, Cinsault- this is an honest wine made in a rich, flavourful style. Concentrated, fruit-focused wine with elegant tannins. In the depths of winter, I like to drink it in front of my pellet stove alongside homemade sausage and white bean cassoulet. In the summer, I’ll have it out on my deck alongside grilled, homemade sausages.

A most rewarding experience spending an evening with this bottle. Over the two hours I spent enjoying it I spent the time enjoying the individual elements which allow this wine as far as I am concerned to punch way above its weight. For those fond of spicy dishes this will allow you to combine them with a wine of class that will not be overwhelmed by the food in your fork.
