The Tatamagouche Brewing Company (commonly referred to as “Tata”) is a family owned and operated craft brewery located in the heart of Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia. In 2014, the family converted an old butcher shop into a brewery, and have since added several additions to the sides and back of the building to help accommodate their growth. In 2023 the brewery launched Nomad, a line of alcohol-free beer. Tata Brew have won awards provincially as well as nationally while they continue to grow their team and brand.
Tasting Notes
Altbier is one of the few styles that’s truly a split between hops and malt in an almost 50/50 ratio. Herbal and pepper notes mingle with toasted brown bread, chestnuts, and caramel that’s backed by very subtle fruit esters. The palate sees many of the same flavours, and the mouthfeel is light, thanks to the lagering process. This Altbier finishes dry with firm bitterness that’s perfectly balanced by some residual malt sugars.
One of the best multipurpose food pairing beers, try this with anything that’s roasted, braised, sautéed, or baked.
Method
An ode to the Rhineland of Germany, Altbier is a crisp traditional style of amber ale that showcases malt flavours of biscuits and graham crackers and enough hop bitterness to strike a balance with the malt sweetness. This Altbier was made with German malt, local Styrian Goldings hops grown on PEI, and was cold conditioned to produce a clean, smooth-drinking, copper coloured ale.
