Le Macchiole is located in Bolgheri, Tuscany, on the stunning Etruscan Coast. The landscape is magical, where rolling hills are blanketed by forest and where vineyards and olive trees meet the Tyrrhenian Sea. Le Macchiole was founded in 1983 on the desire of Eugenio Campolmi and Cinzia Merli to turn their passion for wine into their life dream. It was a revolutionary project rooted in their hometown of Bolgheri, at the time not as famous as now. Eugenio passed away in 2002 at young age and his wife, Cinzia continues on with their dream.  There are 24 hectares of estate owned vineyards, organically farmed with each harvest producing 5 wines: Paleo Bianco – Toscana IGT, Bolgheri Rosso – DOC Bolgheri, Paleo Rosso – Toscana IGT, Scrio – Toscana IGT and Messorio – Toscana IGT.

Tasting Notes

This Bolgheri Bordeaux blend has a splash of Syrah for spice.  It shows ripe red fruit, herbs, spice and a subtle leathery note.   Medium bodied with juicy ripe fruit, fresh acidity and smooth tannins showing polish, balance and great length.  A polished and elegant Supertuscan that is enjoyable now and pairs well with roast meats, pasta, mushroom topped bruschetta or Pecorino cheese.

Method

Bolgheri Rossi is also the youngest of Le Macchiole’s wines, first produced in 2004. The objective: to make a Bordeaux blend, but typical of Bolgheri.  The Bolgheri Rosso is made from grapes grown according to organic farming practices and sourced from two of the estate’s five vineyards: Puntone and Nuova Vignone.  It is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. The wine is fermented for 15 days in stainless steel tanks and then aged for 10 months in a combination of oak and concrete (80% in second and third passage barrique and 20% in concrete).
