The Vietti family were well known vignerons in the 19th century and finally began to produce wine under their own label in the 20th century. Vietti wines come from Castiglione Falletto vineyards, deep in the heart of the Barolo zone.
In 2016 the historic winery was acquired by Krause Holdings, enabling Luca and Elena, always at the head of Vietti brand, to add a number of prized crus to the estate’s holdings, and be able as a result to look to a future with new, stimulating prospects, all while maintaining the family approach for which the cellar has always been known.
Tasting Notes
On the nose explosive, opulent, charming and immediate. Hints of plum, ripe red and black cherry, blackberry, sour cherry, rose petals and tobacco. On the palate it is classic, rich, powerful, with notes of Alpine herbs and a leather finish. Tannins are already well-integrated. Enjoy with roast meats, dishes that contain truffles, aged cheeses.
Method
The “Castiglione” Barolo is Vietti’s expression of a Barolo classico. The grapes come from small yet significant vineyards in the various municipalities of the Barolo region. The vines are between 8 and 41 years old, planted in a clay-limestone soil. Plants are trained with guyot method, with an average density of roughly 4500 units per hectare. All the different crus are vinified and aged separately with slightly different processes to underline the singular characteristics of each parcel and terroir. Fermentation occurs in stainless steel with daily cap submersion for extraction of flavor and color. The wine is aged for roughly 30 months in oak and barriques; all parcels are then carefully blended before bottling.
2019 is considered to be an excellent vintage for Barolo.
Our Thoughts
The Vietti Barolo is a great choice for the consumer looking to cellar a high quality Barolo for future drinking, however this wine is suitable to open and enjoy right now so long as it is properly decanted and opened ahead of time. Classic notes of dark cherries, rose petals, truffle, tar and more. Expect further complexity, refinement and softening of tannins after a few years. Expect even more deliciousness after 10 or so. If you’re a Nebbiolo nerd, this wine is a no-brainer.
