Tenuta delle Terre Nere is an estate located on the northern slopes of Etna, within the hilly belt that extends between Solicchiata and Randazzo, historically the area recognized as the finest in the appellation for fine red wines. Marco De Grazia owns this iconic Etna estate and released its first commercial vintage in 2002 making them a pioneer in the region. The estate consists of approximately 45 hectares divided into 29 plots and in nine “contradas” (sub-zones/crus). The soils differ very much from cru to cru, and even within the crus themselves. The same is true of the altitudes and age of the vines; the vineyards are mainly between 600 and 1000 metres above sea level and the vines between 50 and 100 years old. He is fortunate to own a small plot, less than one hectare of vines, that is over 140 years old! These ancient vines survived phylloxera, and are therefore ungrafted.
Marco de Garzia was once best known for introducing Americans to great Italian wines as an importer, but over the years he has become a reference for the Etna DOC.
Tasting Notes
Pronounced high toned aromas, fresh, floral and vivacious. A bright, citrus driven mineral wine hinting at its volcanic origins.
Method
Made from 100% Carricante grapes grown on deep, loose and dark volcanic ash on the north side of Etna, from 700 to 800 meters above sea level. The vines are on average 10 to 40 years old. Harvested the third week of September, softly pressed and fermented at low temperature in French oak barrels of 5 and 10 hl. Malolactic fermentation and aging in French oak barriques for 9 months.
“I decided to produce it in 2007, after having been lucky enough to taste a 42-year-old Carricante on two separate occasions. This wine turned out to be so beautiful, so impeccable and vigorous despite its Friday age, that I was moved to try to produce something similar. I tried to imagine how an evidently talented winemaker had produced such a wine, moreover virtually without any technological help. And I tried to imitate what I had imagined. The “Vigne Niche” selection is the result. ” Marco de Grazia
