Family owned and operated, Domaine de Grand Pré winery was built on love and passion for Nova Scotia and exceptional wine and food. Hanspeter Stutz, owner and father, is a visionary who first took a leap of faith in 1994, trusting that something special could be established to grow the Nova Scotia wine industry. He wanted to create a world-class destination while building a future for his family.  Hanspeter’s children and their partners manage the vineyards, the winery, the restaurant Le Caveau, and an inn that opened in 2022.   Jurg Stutz is the winemaker at the estate and crafts polished and elegant wines year after year.  The Domaine is known for its crisp and clean flavour profile and they pride themselves in using only 100 per cent Nova Scotian grown grapes.

Tasting Notes

A pronounced, clean and pure nose of freshly picked apples or that faint familiar smell of walking through an apple orchard on a sunny and crisp fall day.  The palate is dry with a refined and persistent mousse indicative of a bottle fermented cider.  Orchard fruit flavours and a steely pleasing finish.  This is a cider for those who love traditional method sparkling wines.  Makes a great aperitif and alternative to sparkling wine.  Pairs perfectly with charcuturie and chesses and pickled foods, pork dishes with apple sauce and traditional turkey dinner.  Feeling lazy?  Have it with dill pickle or salt n vinegar chips and you’ll be equally satisfied!

Method

Grand Pré winemaker Jurg Stutz made this “experimental” cider in 2012, bottled it and forgot it in the cellar for 13 years!  When he came across the batch and tried a few bottles, he was pleasantly surprised with the result.  Sometimes its best to leave things alone and let nature (and science) do its thing!  This bottled fermented cider truly pays homage to one of Nova Scotia’s signature crops and Nova Scotia’s iconic sparkling wine tradition as well as Jurg Stutz’ creativity and meticulous skills as a winemaker.
