Bodega Amalaya, founded in 2010, is located 1,600m above sea level in the rugged high dessert of Argentina’s Calchaqui Valley in the Salta region. This area was once considered unfarmable, but thanks to visionary winemaker Donald Hess who believed in the winemaking potential of the region he pushed forward. Today the region is known as one of the highest viticultural places in the world. Hess’s successors, Larissa and Christoph Ehrbar, at Bodega Amalaya who produce fantastic sustainably farmed wines in this high altitude location in Salta.
Tasting Notes
Opaque purple in colour with ruby tints. Profound aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant and blueberries with spice notes and touches of mint. On the palate, it is rich, velvety and robust with flavours of chocolate, blackberry jam and licorice notes. Well structured with firm, yet ripe tannins and a very long, spice-driven finish.
Method
A blend of The blend 85% Malbec, 10% Cabernet Franc and 5% Tannat from Calchaquí Valley of Salta in northwest Argentina. After fermentation the wine ages for 12 months in a combination of French and American oak.
This area is known for its rugged landscapes, striking red rock formations and high-altitude vineyards producing vibrant, fresh wines with lots of concentration.
