For over 10 years Toronto’s Bellwoods Brewery has established themselves as one of the country’s most iconic craft breweries. From lineups around the block in the early days at their Ossington Ave. location, to opening a second much larger brewery complete with rows upon rows of barrels for mixed fermentation and dark beer ageing. Bellwoods has won a long list of national and international awards and have collaborated with countless world-class breweries.
Tasting Notes
For this year’s International Women’s Day, the Bellwoods Head Brewer, Brittany, turned to the women of Bellwoods to help choose the perfect beer to encapsulate the day. After some spirited discussion, the vote was unanimous: a Brown Ale.
Traditional in style, yet bold and complex in flavour, this Brown Ale delivers a rich tapestry of nutty, biscuity, and crisp notes, with hints of brown molasses, freshly baked bread, subtle dark dried fruit, and a touch of burnt sugar.
Method
Whether English or American versions – both offer a toasted nut, chocolatey character indicative of brown ales. The English brown ale varieties will not be as hoppy or bitter as their American counterparts and favour English hops as well as characterful English ale yeast. Either style can be excellent with a variety of foods, particularly braised meats, but they are perfectly fine to be enjoyed on their own.
