The history of the house dates to 1927 when Denis’ grandfather acquired his first parcels of vines. Denis’s father and uncle ran the domaine for nearly four decades, until 2012, when Denis took over, fulfilling a dream. He and his partner, Estelle, manage the domaine with help in the vineyards from Denis’s father and uncle and a handful of seasonal workers. “Respect for terroir has always been valued here, even in my father’s time,” Denis says. “Today, it’s mostly the material that has evolved. My investments were mainly focused on the quality of the vines and the wine.”The estate is located in the prestigious Vouvray appellation. As part of the Paris basin, the soils are a fossilized marine base. The bedrock, from which the region’s historic cellars are cut, is called tuffeau. The topsoils are flinty clay, limestone, gravels, and marls. The climate is marked by the tension between moderate maritime and more extreme continental influences. The vignerons here have been experiencing the devastating effects of climate change with many recent vintages suffering from the severe weather; hail and various disease pressures. Though when all goes well and with careful vineyard management, the Chenin Blanc here displays mouthwatering acidity and a haunting, richness and depth.

Tasting Notes

This wine is made with the intention of preserving the tradition of crisp, light, classic expressions of Vouvray. Bright citrus and tree fruit aromas give way to a lively dense palate with lots of tension, ripe fruit and minerality. The wine is finished in the style vignerons here call sec tendre, with a few grams of residual sugar to balance acidity and enhance the pure and irrepressible vivacity of the fruit. It shows exceptional balance and is a well suited wine for dishes that contain any fruit or a hint ot sweetness; pork chops and apple sauce, honey glazed ham or a cheese course with chutneys.

Method

Vernou-sur-Brenne, where the Meunier vineyards are clustered just south of a small Loire tributary, is one of 8 villages in the Vouvray AOC. Most of the domaine’s 13 hectares of old-vine Chenin Blanc are planted on south-facing slopes of varying steepness.

This wine is made from Chenin Blanc sourced from vines with an average age of 25 years. The grapes are not botrytis affected. It is pressed slowly, at a low pressure, is cold stabilized, and undergoes a long, cool alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel. Once the fermentation is over, the wine is racked and aged on the fine lees, receiving battonage when necessary.
