The Echeverría family came to Chile in the 1750s, from a little town called Amezqueta in the Basque region of Spain. They established agricultural crops and planted vines. Today the company is a global enterprise. Echeverria has always been at the forefront of the modern Chilean wine industry while honouring tradition and respecting the environment. This tradition is expressed through their wines which are classic and elegant in style and showcase intense fruit aromas and flavours which are the hallmarks of Chilean wine thanks to the country’s privileged terroir and climatic conditions. Echeverria has an extensive portfolio of over 30 wines from over 10 different grape varieties and several wine growing regions.
Roberto Echeverría Jr has been the Chief Winemaker at Viña Echeverría since 2001. Inspired by his French heritage, Roberto’s signature style produces wines with a combination of Old World elegance and New World energy. More European viticultural techniques include timely harvesting to avoid over ripeness and therefore good balance and control of alcohol levels. Focus is on French varietals, barrels and yeasts, as well as longer fermentation and aging in barrels and diverse blending.
Tasting Notes
This elegant Pinot Noir combines aromas of strawberries, black cherries and raspberries with hints of chocolate and mocha. The palate is round and soft, with refreshing acidity and balanced fruit. This wine works well with earthy flavors such as mushrooms and truffles. It can also nicely complement oily fish such as salmon and tuna, or grilled and roasted lighter meats, such as pheasant, lamb or duck.
Method
Made from Pinot Noir grapes grown in Casablanca Valley (Costa) Chile’s first cool-climate coastal region, located 75km northwest of Santiago. This area has a cool Mediterranean climate with pronounced maritime influence, the soils are clay and sandy and the proximity to the ocean creates a cooling foggy; all of these ecological factors create an ideal environment to evenly ripen Pinot Noir for quality wine production.
The grapes are hand picked and cold skin maceration at 5°C for 4-5 days prior to fermentation. The wine ferments to dryness in stainless steel tanks for 10-12 days at 26-29ºC with selected yeasts. The wine then undergoes malolactiv fermentation and 75% of the wine ages for 6 months in used French oak barrels.
