Electric Spirit Co. was founded by award-winning distiller, James Porteous. James has a a background in service design in London, after studying product design at Glasgow School of Art. Moving back to Edinburgh he joined Heriot Watts Brewing & Distilling MSC, where he focused on botanicals for his dissertation project. James graduated first in the faculty and started putting together a plan for what would become The Electric Spirit Company. Electric Spirit Co. kicked off in 2014, distilling for the first time in the summer the following year. It was the first distillery to operate in Leith since the closure of Melrose Drover, 40 years earlier.
Tasting Notes
From the distillery: “Aroma: A big, wafting nose, especially once you’ve added tonic, the sichuan peppercorns bring a huge, floral spice, while the fennel adds a grassy, herbaceous hint of anis.
Palate: First and foremost, a big whack of juniper, from there, there’s a woody, musty quality from the root botanicals, a gentle sweetness from the fennel seed, and a frgrant, earthy citrus from the peppercorns.”
Method
The name comes from ancient Greek, meaning colourless. It is pronounced ACH-ROO-US (‘Ach’ like ‘Bach’, ‘roo’ like ‘blue’, ‘us’ like ‘fuss’).
There are seven botanicals in total; Juniper Berries, Coriander Seeds, Angelica Root, Liquorice Root, Orris Root are the first five that are the backbone of the gin, giving a rich and resinous base to the spirit. Sichuan Peppercorns gives a fizzy, spiced, citrus flavour, and a woody, floral aroma. Fennel Seed gives a hint of herbaceous aniseed, and an earthy, herbal note on the nose.
Designed as a Negroni gin – flavour profile compliments the bitter / sweet profile of the drink. Be sure to also try out the Signature G&T Serve:
o Highball glass
o Lots of good ice
o Fever Tree Refreshingly Light Tonic
o No garnish required (although lemon or pink grapefruit work well)
