Azienda Agricola Fontaleoni is a small estate founded in 1959 by the Troiani family in Tuscany’s San Gimignano.  The estate was restructured in the nineties, the cellar was renovated and new vineyards were planted in order to produce high-quality wines.  The vineyards are located at 200 meters above sea level the ideal altitude for growing the Vernaccia varietal.  They take great care to produce healthy high quality grapes by keeping the yields low and carefully managing the harvest and winemaking.  Their first bottling was in 1994 and the wines have continued to garner acclaim since that time.

Tasting Notes

Straw yellow coloured, floral and fruity notes. The palate is light with tree fruit and delicate floral notes, crisp thanks to lively acidity and a suggestion of minerality.  Enjoy this light bodied unoaked white wine white fish, steamed mussels with garlic and crusty bread, caprese salad, pizza with stracchino and rucola or  medium flavoured cheeses.

Method

Made from Vernaccia grapes from the area of San Gimignano; a medieval town in the heart of Tuscany.   The wine has a rich history dating back to the late 1280s.  San Gimignano is famous for its centuries-old towers that dot the town that were erected as safeguards to see approaching enemies. Vernaccia di San Gimignano was also the first DOC wine to be declared in Italy, in 1966.  Traditionally Vernaccia di San Gimignano was fermented with skins and aged in large old wood casks (orange wine).  In the 1980s, the majority of producers shifted winemaking methods using stainless steel and temperature controlled ferments and skin maceration.  Today most Vernaccia is made in a light and fresh style.

This wine is 100% Vernaccia grown an at altitude of 100/300 mt asl.  The vines are between 15-30 years old and farmed organically.  Hand harvested, softly pressed, fermentated in stainless steel tanks at temperatures under 20°C, lightly filtered before bottling.
