Domaine de Fontsainte is in the heart of the Corbières’ celebrated ‘Golden Crescent’ – one of the appellation’s most beautiful and beneficent terroirs. Fontsainte’s intensely sunny, gently sloping, south south-east facing vineyards shelter from cold north-east winds on the flank of a 500-hectare pinewood massif (right). The domain dominates the landscape around the hamlet of Boutenac, enjoying panoramic views. Fontsainte’s vineyards, just 95m in altitude, benefit from a pristine environment (far from industrial or urban developments) plus alternating Mediterranean and oceanic influences. Domaine Fontsainte uses minimal intervention in the vineyard and winery; their viticultural approach is considered a “lutte raisonnée” practice. They are certified “Haute Valeur Environnementale”; a certification supported by the Ministry of Agriculture and verified by independent organizations. The domaine protects the of biodiversity of flora and fauna in the vineyard and microbial life in the soil (using minimal copper or insecticides), all fertilizer must come from organic matter, and water use must be measured, reduced, or eliminated.
Tasting Notes
Expressive nose; the wine immediately gives off notes of herbs and rhubarb followed by watermelon and red fruit (raspberry, cherry, strawberry). There is a pleasing minerality and good concentration, freshness and persistence.
Method
The 2022 vintage is a blend of 90% Grenache Gris, 5% Mourvèdre; 5% Carignan. The grapes grow on soil composed of silica, clay, limestone with some gravel and pudding stones. The grapes are harvested by hand and kept whole. The wine is made via saignée method, where a portion of the juice is “bled”from the vat after it has spent some time in contact with the skins. After a natural settling of the juice for 24 hours, the alcoholic fermentation takes place at 18°C for 35 days. The malolactic fermentation is blocked and the wine rests for 1 month before bottling, preserving all the freshness and intensity of its aromas.

The Fontsainte Gris de Gris is excellent, and quite consistently so. It supports my belief that if it’s a Kermit Lynch product, it will be wonderful! I’ve found my favourite for the summer!
