Tenuta Il Poggione is over a century old estate that came to be when a Florentine landowner, Lavinio Franceschi, visited and purchased land in the area after hearing a shepherd speak of its beauty.   Generation after generation, many resources were spent on research for quality, clonal selections, winemaking and aging techniques, and also by building a modern winery for the standards at that time.  Il Poggione was among the first wineries to market the Brunello di Montalcino wine as early as the 1900’s, and one of the founding members of the Brunello di Montalcino Consortium.

Today the estate covers an area of 530 hectares (1300 acres) of which 140 hectares (336 acres) are planted with vines and 50 hectares are planted with olive trees.  The rest of the land is dedicated to grain fields, livestock and forest.   The estate practices sustainable viticulture and has always planted different crops along the vineyards and limited the use of chemicals.   Il Poggione is Montalcino’s fourth largest estate and is considered by many wine critics to be one of the most reasonably priced and cellar worthy wines on the market today. ll Poggione has a reputation for making consistent and stylish Brunello di Montalcino.

Tasting Notes

Red berry and wild strawberry, spice, leather and woody herbs on  the nose.  The palate is full, with great concentration and flavors that echo the nose.  Deep and multilayered with polished tannins and a harmonious acid spine that lifts and extends the red fruit onto a long, suave finish.  It’s always beneficial to decant your young Brunello to expose it to some oxygen to experience the aromas and their tannins at their best.  Enjoy this with  prime cuts of beef, pasta in a meaty ragu sauce or a selection of firm aged cheeses.

Method

Brunello is the prince of Montalcino wines, produced exclusively from Sangiovese grapes picked by hand from the oldest vines in the farm. After a careful fermentation at controlled temperature, Tenuta Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino is aged in French oak barrels for 36 months. After being aged in wood, the wine is bottle aged: this is an essential process in guaranteeing the pleasantness and the complexity that have made the Brunello di Montalcino world-famous.
