After marrying his childhood sweetheart, Claudine, Jean-Marc Brocard moved from his native village in Burgundy’s Cote d’Or region, to her hometown in Chablis. As a wedding present, Claudine’s father presented the couple with 1.5 acres of vines near the Church of Saint Claire and in 1972 the Domaine Jean-Marc Brocard was born.

In 1998 Jean-Marc decided to cultivate most of their vineyards using biodynamic principles, which is a step further towards sustainability than even organic viticulture. Biodynamic preparations based on extracts from beneficial plants are sprayed over the vineyard to boost the vine’s natural defences, thus protecting it from diseases in a completely natural way. Work in the vineyards and in the cellars is also carried out in harmony with the rhythms of nature and the lunar, solar cycles. Brocard’s Chablis expresses the pure quality of the chalky and mineral soil.

Tasting Notes

Aromatically the wine is full of mixed citrus flavors such as lemon zest as well as lime zest, along with a peppery note. On the palate, the wine is precise with its acidity, along with just underripe peaches and a breathe note of creaminess from its contact with lees.

According to MW, Sarah Marsh, the 2022 vintage was a successful year in Chablis, where “gorgeous fruit” combines beautifully with freshness in wines that have “a spring in their step.”  The wines lend themselves to early drinking as well as cellaring.  Expect finesse and excellent balance.

Method

The fruit for the Montée de Tonnerre 1er Cru comes from 30+ year-old vines located in clos proximity to the Grand Cru Chablis sites.  The vines are farmed biodynamically.  Indigenous yeast fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats followed by malolactic conversion and 14 months ageing on the lees in wooden vats.

There are 40 climats (vine growing areas) that can be associated with the label Chablis Premier Cru, including 17 iconic climats that have achieved higher visibility within the region.  “Montée de Tonnerre” is one such 1er Cru.
