Le Macchiole is located in Bolgheri, Tuscany, on the stunning Etruscan Coast. The landscape is magical, where rolling hills are blanketed by forest and where vineyards and olive trees meet the Tyrrhenian Sea. Le Macchiole was founded in 1983 on the desire of Eugenio Campolmi and Cinzia Merli to turn their passion for wine into their life dream. It was a revolutionary project rooted in their hometown of Bolgheri, at the time not as famous as now. The idea was simple but decisive: to originate in the vineyard, investing completely in research and experimentation in planting including varieties lesser used in Bolgheri. There are 24 hectares of estate owned vineyards, organically farmed with each harvest producing 5 wines.
Tasting Notes
Texture is something you expect from this wine; it is plush but with lots of structure. This is if Le Macchiole’s flagship wine and is a Merlot that benefits from time to reach its peak. Supple and silky with inviting savoury red fruit flavours and scents that are reminiscent of the warm Mediterranean coast.
Method
Messorio, first produced in 1994, Messorio was a personal challenge with one of the most planted varieties in Bolgheri, on the Tuscan coast, and in the world: Merlot. From the start, the idea was to transform the best bunches into an impactful wine with a lot of personality, staying as far away as possible from the more soft, predictable style that is often associated with Merlot and instead making a thoroughbred eager to win the race. The name “messorio” refers to the wheat harvest, one of the most fundamental parts of the agricultural cycle. Fermentation and maceration for 30 days in concrete, aged 19 monthes in new oak barriques.
