Since 1956, the Piedmonte winemaker Michele Chiarlo has made superior Barberas and high quality Barolos that today are consistently among the most renowned expressions of these wines. Over the years, Michele Chiarlo has realized a success and recognition brought by constant pursuit of quality. The winery is 100% family owned and operated, showcasing only local, single varietal expressions of terroir- no international grapes and no blends. The family specializes in 4 grapes that are considered to be the greatest native varietals of Piedmont: Nebbiolo, Barbera, Cortese and Moscato.

Tasting Notes

The wine is a garnet with a brilliant luminous hue.  The nose is inviting and complex with notes of rose petals , juniper berries and fine spices.  The palate is ample, well structured with silky textured tannins remarkable elegance and persistence.  Enjoy this with pasta with porcini mushrooms, game birds, well-matured cheeses.

Method

The Nebbiolo grapes for this Barolo are sourced from the prestigious Cerequio cru which is situated between villages of La Morra and Barolo.  The site boasts a magnificent amphitheatre of vineyards where the soils, exposure and microclimate come together to create exceptional Barolos.  The vineyard has a south and south-west facing exposure and sits at an altitude of 320 m asl.  The soils of Cerequio are among the most ancient in Langhe and were formed during the Tortanian period (approx. 9 million years ago!); from which the wine takes its name.  Calcareous clay marl of sedimentary marine origine, a basic pH, poor in organic matter, but rich in microelements such as magnesium and manganese produce wines of great balance and character: austere, structured and elegant with great aromatics.

Fermented in stainless steel with 15 to 18 days of maceration on the skins with remontage.  The wines ages for a minimum of 3 years from 18 to 24 months in oak casks before undergoing a period of refinement in bottle.
