Originally founded in 1820, the Movia winery and estate in Brda (Slovenia) was one of Europe’s most famous wineries in the years that followed World War II.  Located in the village of Ceglo in the heart of the Brda appellation, just across the border from Italy; a stone’s throw away from Friuli-Venezia-Giulia’s Collio region. Movia put the Slovenia on the map of the world’s great wine regions in the late 1990s when the interest in wines grown in former Eastern Bloc states began to flourish.

The current generation of Movia is led by winemaker Aleš Kristančič who is as renowned for his passionate embrace of organic and biodynamic farming practices as he is for his larger-than-life personality and ingenious approach to winemaking.

Today, Aleš primarily grows Rebula, Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Merlot, and Pinot Noir — all without the use of herbicides, pesticides, or fungicides. 

Tasting Notes

Aromas of ripe plum, black cherry, blackberry and dried flowers that gives way to a perception of cinnamon, caramel, forest undergrowth, leather and light cedar and toast.  It is an elegant and structured wine that shows its youth and intensity. The palate is fresh with minerality, the tannins are ripe giving way to a gradual grip. Fruit and spice flavors linger on the finish. 

A harmonious wine that will only enhance its true expression and is suitable for a long maturation.   Enjoy with duck, veal or pork dishes. 

Method

Crafted from Pinot Noir form vineyards in Vinia Vrh (village Fojana) and Vinia Njiva (village Zegla); grown in soild of clay and ponca.  The yields are very low, just 25 hl/ha.  The juice and skins macerate for 7 days.  The wine ages for 1 year in 225l barrels and 6 months in stainless steel before bottling.
