In 1981, Pask planted the first vines in an ancient Ngaruroro riverbed, founding Hawke’s Bay’s renowned Gimblett Gravels wine district.  Founder Chris Pask – flying in the cockpit of his topdressing plane – first saw the potential for growing exceptional grapes in the light, stony soils of the ancient Ngaruroro riverbed.  Sheltered from Pacific breezes and several degrees warmer than any other New Zealand wine-growing area, it was in this sun-drenched valley that Chris planted Pask’s first vines.   Today, the Pask winemaking team remain as passionate as ever about creating wines to be shared and enjoyed.

Tasting Notes

Deep purple in colour with aromas of ripe red and black berries, plum, pepper, dried herbs and subtle leather and smokey notes.  This  mid-weight Syrah has fine supple tannins and good acidity.  You can sip on its own or pair with foods such as grilled or barbecued meats, sausages or pulled pork.

Method

The 2022 vintage was a mixed bag with warm weather leading into December and the new year, followed with some strong fresh winds and warm night then early vintage it started raining. Choosing when and how often to pick was the key, getting fruit in clean with higher acids, or leaving it out through the rains and getting it in ripe but with lower acids.

The Syrah grapes were fermented in stainless steel and aged for 18 months in seasoned French oak.
