By crossing the Rhône from Châteauneuf-du-Pape you will arrive in Tavel, a small village in the Provençal Gard. To the west stands the Pont du Gard, not far from Uzès and its famous market. Further down is Avignon, the city of Popes. Ideally located in the heart of Tavel is the Prieuré de Montézargues, nestled in the Mediterranean forest and dominated by Mont Ventoux. A little piece of paradise cut off from the world!
The history of Tavel, which King Philip the Fair called the “king of rosés,” dates back to Roman times. Prieuré de Montézargues wines were the only ones, along with the Burgundy Clos de Vougeot, officially identified as appearing at the pontifical table when the papacy resided in Avignon, in the 14th century.
Tasting Notes
Vibrant pink in the glass with a charming nose, typical Tavel; yellow peach, red red currant, blood orange. Immediately seducive on the palate thanks to sweet tones of almond and pastry cream. This medium to full-bodied wine has lots of concentration, cherry pit, Sicilian
orange, ripe peach and anise notes that linger on the finish. Enjoy this flavourful rosé with roasted or grilled white meats and vegetables, would be a treat with herby lamb kebabs and a good choice for meatier fish like salmon or halibut.
Method
A blend of 50% Grenache (Noir, Gris and Blanc), 15% Mourvèdre, 15% Cinsault, 10% Syrah, 10% Clairette grown on sandy, light and well draining soils covered by the famous large rounded stones (galets roulés) of this part of the Rhône Valley. Grapes are hand-picked early in the morning and carefully sorted prior to vinincation. Then they are directly pressed in a pneumatic press for 3 hours. After fermentation at low temperature wines are blended for aging on the lees for 4 months in stainless steel vats.
