First opening their doors in 1997, Propeller Brewing Company has gone from a small brewery on Gottingen St. brewing a Pale Ale and an Extra Special Bitter to become one of the largest brewery’s in Nova Scotia and a driving force in this industry. Owner John Allen has allowed the business to grow and branch into multiple locations and a comprehensive product line that includes beer, ready to drink cocktails, and craft sodas. They have won awards both locally and nationally for a wide array of products and continue to experiment with new styles and old favourites.
Tasting Notes
Cheers a craft brew, even without the alcohol. This crisp and fresh non-alcoholic lager hits the spot with light, fruity notes and a clean finish.
Method
A new method called membrane filtration is used to make non-alcoholic beverages. This is a high pressure process where fully fermented beer (of any style) is pumped through a series of membrane filters at extremely high pressure and speed. The beer actually separates into two parts; water and alcohol that can be used to make hard seltzer, and also dealcoholized, unhydrated beer. The brewery can then rehydrate the beer extract and boom – non alcoholized beer! And it tastes the most like beer, without the off-flavours and sweetness. This process has become the gold standard amongst craft beer breweries.
